P-Trap
Definition:

A waste fitting that has locknuts to enable removal for service.  Once fully assembled, the assembly remembles a 'P', hence the name P-Trap.  The part that drops down allows for the accumilation of drain water to settle at the bottom.  The water level settles to where there is a 'water seal' that prevents toxic methane sewer gas from escaping from the sewer system and entering into the dwelling.
